What is a tummy tuck?

The tummy tuck is also known as abdominoplasty. This procedure removes excess skin and fat from the abdominal region and tightens the abdominal wall. The results of a tummy tuck are dramatic and almost all of Dr. Ciaravino’s patients are happy with the results. A mini-abdominoplasty is performed on patients who have issues only with their lower abdomen.

Who is a candidate for a tummy tuck?

If you want to get back the tight, flat abdomen you had in your youth due to its expansion through age, or wish to have loose skin and stretch marks from pregnancy removed, and are in general good health, you may be a candidate for a tummy tuck. Dr. Ciaravino will determine this during your initial consultation.

What is the tummy tuck procedure like?

After you are placed under general anesthesia, Dr. Ciaravino makes an incision below the bikini line and extends it toward the hip bone. Another incision is made around the navel. The excess skin and fat are removed. Sutures are then placed along the center of the abdomen. This tightens the muscles and gives definition. Liposuction may be performed to contour the sides, and breast augmentation is often done in conjunction with the tummy tuck procedure.

What is the tummy tuck recovery process like?

Dr. Ciaravino performs the tummy tuck procedure in an outpatient surgery center, so you are not in the hospital. During your surgery, a special pain medication is infused to ensure maximum comfort. A drain will be placed to remove excess fluid that builds up. You are also given a compression garment that must be worn for several weeks to help tighten your skin. You will likely go home the same day you have surgery. Full recovery may take several weeks, but you will probably be able to return to work in one to two weeks.
