CryoPen is a simple and effective way to permanently remove imperfections on the skin. Treatment is fast, minimally invasive, and requires virtually no downtime for recovery. Using the CryoPen, Dr. Ciaravino’s RN Tammy Wolf can quickly and accurately eliminate unwanted skin lesions, leaving your skin smooth and flawless.
CryoPen is a hand-held medical device that uses extreme cold to rapidly change the temperature of the skin and remove unwanted skin lesions from the epidermis (top layer of skin). The science behind CryoPen is amazingly simple. Cells begin to die at minus 20 degrees Celsius. The tip of CryoPen can achieve temperatures as low as minus 89 degrees Celsius, which is far colder than the minimum freezing temperature needed to kill cells.
CryoPen delivers a high-pressured, steady stream of nitrous oxide to the treatment area to achieve this drastic temperature drop. The nitrous oxide is aimed directly onto the lesion for a period of time, based on the size and type of lesion. Maintaining this extremely low temperature causes the cells to freeze and rupture, ultimately killing the cells and eliminating the unwanted skin lesion. Because CryoPen precisely applies nitrous oxide to only the lesion being treated, surrounding tissues aren’t damaged.
CryoPen is one of the least invasive and most accurate ways to treat a wide range of superficial skin lesions, including:
The non-invasive, precise nature of CryoPen allows it to be used on adults and children of all skin types. In addition, CryoPen can be used on nearly any part of the body, exercising caution in the delicate region around the eye and in or near the hairline where it can cause damage to hair follicles. Most results are considered permanent and are achieved with only one or two treatments.
Once you decide that CryoPen is right for you, you can expect a quick, simple and virtually pain-free treatment experience. First, the treatment area will be cleaned. Because this treatment is non-invasive, no numbing shots or topical numbing agents are necessary.
To begin treatment, our nurse Tammy will aim the CryoPen at the lesion and stream nitrous oxide precisely onto the affected area. The stream will be consistently maintained for a predetermined period of time, depending on the type and size of the skin lesion. For example, skin tags take 10 to 30 seconds to freeze, basic warts require 45 to 90 seconds of freezing and more complex lesions may need as much as 180 seconds of freezing.
If a lesion is particularly stubborn, Tammy may pause for a few minutes to allow the frozen cells to thaw, and then perform a second freeze. This freeze-thaw-freeze technique adds a level of thoroughness that decreases the chances of lesion regrowth. Once your CryoPen session is complete, there is no need to apply medicine or bandages and you are free to return to your normal activities. Tammy will want to see you in four weeks to assess the treated area and determine if additional treatment is necessary.
Immediately following your CryoPen treatment, the lesion will look white and you may feel a mild stinging sensation. Both are temporary and should dissipate quickly. Over the next few days, the lesion may be sore and could ooze or form a blister. There is no need to cover it, as leaving it open to fresh air promotes faster healing.
Within approximately one week, a scab will form, causing the area to feel tight or itchy. Resist the urge to pick or scratch at the site, as this could cause scarring, infection, or increased healing time. The scab will slough off over the next few weeks. Depending on the size and severity of the lesion, it can take one to four weeks for it to heal.
The healing process will leave behind new skin that may be lighter or darker than the rest of your skin. This is completely normal, and within two to six months, your normal pigmentation will return to the treated area. Protect your healing skin by wearing sunblock and following a healthy skin care regimen.
CryoPen is a safe and straightforward treatment that doesn’t require the use of anesthesia, numbing shots or topical numbing agents. The treatment is quick – just a few seconds are needed for effective, lasting removal of superficial imperfections. CryoPen doesn’t cut the skin or require stitches, resulting in less trauma to your skin and less chance for complications. CryoPen is precise, so it will only affect the lesion being treated and will not harm surrounding tissues.
There is less recovery time required with CryoPen, as compared to other lesion removal treatments (electrocautery, cold knife, or laser). Fast recovery allows you to resume your normal activities immediately after being treated. Results are often permanent after only one or two treatments, making CryoPen an affordable, effective treatment for minor skin lesions.
